Facebook’s $1 message test opens inboxes to strangers

The experiment seems enabled in part by Facebook’s new policies, which remove the capability to block messages from people you aren’t friends with. Under this policy, the main Inbox is reserved for messages from friends, or for other messages that Facebook’s algorithms deem important. Everything else is routed to an “Other” section. In the test, users can pay $1 to make sure their messages land in the Inbox, rather than the Other section. Facebook thinks this could be the best way to deliver important messages from non-friends while keeping spam out of the Inbox.

Facebook puts mobile ads test on hold

Facebook said it is halting a test of placing ads in “apps” that synch to the leading social network, renewing questions on how it will boost revenues from members using smartphones or tablets.

“We are pausing our mobile ads test off of Facebook,” a company spokesman said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.

“While the results we have seen and the feedback from partners have been positive, our focus is on scaling ads in mobile news feed before ads off of Facebook.”

Facebook shares were down slightly on the news, slipping less than a percent to $27.60 in late afternoon trading on the Nasdaq exchange.

Facebook stock rallied in October after the company reported quarterly earnings that showed gains in tapping the mobile advertising market.

During an earnings call with analysts, founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said the company was “just getting started with our mobile product development and monetization.

Facebook went public in May with a resounding flop, its $38 initial public offering price immediately plunging to eventually less than half that.

That angered many investors who had built hopes that the company’s huge popularity would result in huge gains in the share price.

Fakebook [Not Facebook]

Image representing Facebook as depicted in Cru...

We face a debate about social media and our right to be free. Well, all repressive measures clamped by any political system ) on social media can’t be explained or  much less  justified. When a voice is silenced, a choice is born.

You choose alternative means to make yourself heard. When other physical means of resistance are being cracked down on, technology comes in handy. And that is where we come face to face with our extended family Facebook.

Facebook literally changed the face of the world by piecing people together. It makes us free to exchange ideas, to know and to read each other’s minds. This all contributes to the health of a society. Through it we participate, we protest, we demand, we resist. It grants us what we were dying for. Freedom unlimited. So far so good. The trouble erupts when the same platform is used to spread hate, to kill those virtually whom you don’t want to see live actually, to create public disorder for setting your own lands in order.

That makes Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook founder rue the day, he gave us this incredible mode of idea sharing. And the trouble deepens when we slip in disguised. We become fakes there by turning Facebook into a “Fakebook“. We hide behind pseudonyms and shoot our malice at anyone and anything we want to, and the irony is we get away with it.

We want to throw, we don’t want to be spotted. We kick you in the face, but we don’t show our face. That is not courage, that is hypocrisy at its cheapest, lowest. That is not freedom, that is stink we spread in the name of freedom. And if that is the freedom of expression which defines our relationship with social media, I cast my vote against that freedom.

Instagram to crack down on spam

Instagram announced late on Friday it planned to tackle its massive spam problem head on, devoting a number of engineers to fixing the issue inside the service.

“There’s no quick fix, but we have a team of engineers working every day to tackle the issue and we hope you’ll notice their improvements,” Instagram said, appropriately enough, in the comments section of a recent photo taken from the official Instagram account.

Take a look at the “Explore” tab inside the Instagram app, and click on any one of the pictures. They’re flooded with spammy comments, ads for promotional accounts and Web sites. Same thing with the account of any major celebrity who uses the service and has a large following.

But now that the small start-up has been acquired and folded into Facebook, CEO Kevin Systrom has the resources and experience of the world’s largest social network to help Instagram in the fight. Facebook has lots of background in this area, having fought against spammers intensely over its eight-year existence with tools like the artificially intelligent Facebook Immune System, and having even gone after some well-established spammers in court.

No word on how Instagram is going to crack down internally, but externally, Instagram wants users to help in a sort of community watch program, flagging spam by clicking through to spammers’ accounts and reporting them.

FB asked to stop ads

Facebook should stop advertising to users in Nordic countries or face legal action, the Norwegian consumer agency said on Thursday.

The agency, like its counterparts in the Nordic region, wants to put an end to the advertisements that appear on users’ news feeds.

It has sent a letter to the European Commission to determine whether Facebook is in line with the EU’s directive on privacy and electronic communication — and possibly to make amendments to rules drawn up before Facebook was founded.

“It is prohibited to send electronic advertisements to consumers who haven’t given their consent, either by email or SMS,” consumer mediator Gry Nergaard told AFP.

“We think that some of the advertising that Facebook calls ‘Sponsored Stories’ is beginning to look like unsolicited electronic messages,” she said.

Facebook is struggling to generate advertising revenue, claims it is abiding by European and Norwegian laws.

Its spokesman in northern Europe, Jan Fredriksson, said users could choose to block this type of advertising in their settings.

But Nergaard said it was not enough to provide an “opt out” option, the key issue was that Facebook did not have users’ prior consent.

Facebook testing Ranked Comments

Facebook is testing a new comments format on brand and subscriber pages by placing the most engaging comments up higher on posts, the company said.

“We are testing a new format for comments on Page posts,” Facebook said in a statement to Mashable. “As part of this test, the most engaging comments appear higher up. You will also be able to reply to individual comments as well as the original post.”‘

The concept is similar to how users on Reddit rank posts by “upvoting” and “downvoting” content.
