We all know those TV screens we see installed in more & more public areas like stores, restaurants, above gas pumps, food menu boards, & lots of other places. Well, that’s called Digital Signage.
Digital Signage is used typically to inform or advertise using dynamic content. The clever thing is that everything we see on those screens, like multimedia videos, images, ads, can be updated and managed from a remote location using the web. And if you want to dig deeper, you will find that dynamic messages like ads or text messages can be displayed on Ipads and the user can even interact with certain Digital Signage presentation trough some modules called Kiosk modules.
A Kiosk technology is something we see every day. At ATM’s for example, when you manage your bank account and you press on a touchscreen that has a KIOSK module behind it. You can read more on Wikipedia on what is a KIOSK.
But how does it all work and what makes it useful for the ordinary user?
Combining the interactive proprieties of a KIOSK module with the everyday web, together with using an iPad as the final user interface, belongs to a new form of Digital Signage. If the old, traditional technology involved just some TV screens where you were able to watch some nice TV ads in your local grocery store, now all went a step further.
Let’s assume you are the owner of a local electronics shop and you are trying to keep the customers in your shop for a longer period of time. You’ve heard about Digital Signage but since you own an electronics store, with TV screens all over the place, it won’t be such a good idea to install one in a corner and just play your message on the screen. But what if you use a Signage player, install the player on some iPads, builds a Signage interactive presentation, and just place the iPads in your store. That will definitely attract more customers.
But for an ordinary web user that has no company or doesn’t own any store, you can still use Digital Signage on an Ipad usefully, for fun or to make jokes with your buddies.
On your iPad, you can turn on a Signage Presentation that has some web modules embedded and that’s very useful since iPads don’t work with Flash. But Signage Players do. And if you install one on your iPad and embed a flash movie it will work on your ipad due to the architecture of the Player itself that actually bypasses the iPad functions that deny access to flash based files.
So Digital Signage used on iPads is indeed a step further in terms of new and useful technology.
